Every year, a spectacular phenomenon draws crowds along the Mekong: fireballs burst from the dark waters of the river.
This phenomenon, still scientifically unexplained, gives rise to the famous Nong Khai Fireball Festival (Bang Fai Phaya Nak – บั้งไฟพญานาค ).

When and where to observe fireballs
The phenomenon usually occurs around the 15th day of the waxing moon of the 11th lunar month (October according to the Gregorian calendar).
It takes place around the end of Buddhist Lent, known as Ok Phansa , which marks the end of the monks' retreat, on October 7 this year.
In 2025, the festival is planned to take place on October 9 and 10 , subject to official confirmation.
The best observation points are located:
- along the river in Nong Khai Phon Phisai district
- in the neighboring province of Bueng Kan
The first apparitions are usually observed after 6:00 p.m.
A fascinating phenomenon

The mysterious fireballs appear silently, rise from the surface of the Mekong River and disappear into the night sky.
Their glowing red glow and unpredictable appearance have fueled legends and debates.
Origins and beliefs
According to local tradition, these fireballs are the sacred breath of the Nagas , mythical half-human, half-serpent creatures living in the river.
They would pay homage to the Buddha at the end of Lent.
This myth is deeply rooted in the culture of the Mekong river provinces, notably Nong Khai and Bueng Kan.
A contested scientific explanation
Science suggests the spontaneous ignition of methane gas from the river sediments.
However, this explanation remains controversial because no device has been able to indisputably confirm the origin of the flames.
The Naga Fireball Festival 2025
Every year, local authorities prepare reception areas and numerous cultural events (dances, parades, markets) for visitors who come to witness this unique spectacle.
The festival attracts thousands of people, both Buddhist devotees and tourists fascinated by the mystery.
