He is remembered as the king who introduced many social and political reforms that helped modernize Siam, including the abolition of slavery.
He ascended to the throne in 1868 at the age of 15 and was crowned king in 1873.
He reigned until his death in 1910.

How is Chulalongkorn Day celebrated?
To commemorate this day, many Thais show their respect for the great monarch by laying wreaths and flowers at the statue of Rama V in their hometowns.
The Ministry of Interior is asking each provincial government to hold ceremonies in honor and memory of King Chulalongkorn.
As Chulalongkorn Day is a day of remembrance and not a Buddhist holiday, bars and other entertainment venues remain open.
Immigration offices, but not airport and land border checkpoints, will be closed.
Post offices, major bank branches (except those located in shopping malls) and government offices will also be closed.

Thailand's only great leader, he broke with feudalism.
It must be said that his British tutor and then advisor opened his eyes to the emancipation of peoples.
I recommend "Anna and the King," the autobiography of her tutor/advisor.
