Bangkok's most anticipated new attraction, IconSiam, is finally open to the public. It is the country's largest shopping mall, nicknamed the "Mother of All Malls."
The first phase of IconSiam, a $1.6 billion project, opened to the public on November 10.

IconSiam is not just a shopping mall

“Iconsiam is a destination, not a mall or mixed-use development, born from a joint creative effort that united the hearts of Thais from all walks of life,” said Chadatip Chutrakul, director of Iconsiam.
“You can not only buy there, but also live there,” proclaims its official website.
There are also two residential towers. The Magnolia Waterfront Residences , which has 70 floors and is made up of 379 condominiums.
Mandarin Oriental 's first residential development in Southeast Asia, featuring 146 luxury units.
Prices for two-bedroom units in the towers start at $2.58 million.
More than 90% of the 525 homes located in the two luxury towers have already been sold.
IconSiam: Mixed opinions
![]()
There was no shortage of criticism throughout the process of building IconSiam.
Many people claim that Bangkok does not need another shopping mall where the average resident cannot even afford to shop.
But if the opening weekend was any indicator—it opened to the public on November 10—Iconsiam will have no problem filling its glittering halls.
Thousands of people passed through its gates, a mix of Thais and foreign tourists, leaving little room to move.
According to Apple, hundreds of people lined up outside its new Iconsiam store overnight to be among the first to enter on Saturday morning.

Where is IconSiam located?
The center is located on Charoen Nakhon Road, on the Thonburi side of Bangkok, across the Chao Phraya River and the city center.
An area mainly populated by traditional shops and family businesses.
Thonburi, already home to luxury hotels like the Peninsula and the Millennium Hilton, has begun to receive increased attention in recent years, thanks to the addition of venues such as the Jam Factory – a riverside dining space – and a shopping and heritage area housed in reclaimed warehouses.
There are also backpacker hostels and small bars/restaurants selling craft beers.
How to get to IconSiam
The developers of the Iconsiam center have invested in a rail line called the "Gold Line," intended to ease traffic problems, but it will not operate until 2020.
You can reach the center by Bangkok's BTS Skytrain, getting off at Saphan Taksin Station and taking a free shuttle boat or continuing to Thonburi Station, where shuttles make the 1.5 km journey to Iconsiam.
A number of riverside hotels also offer boat shuttle services.
