Thirty-five people were injured in Phuket, southern Thailand, after a speedboat struck a buoy in Chalong Bay on Wednesday evening.
An initial investigation revealed that the boat driver, identified as Sathit Matchai, may have dozed off, said Nachapong Pranit, the provincial navy chief.
The accident occurred as the Thanathip Marine 555 boat was bringing 21 Russian tourists, 9 Kazakhs, 2 Chinese and one Ukrainian from the Phi Phi Islands to Chalong Bay in Phuket at around 5:30 p.m.
There was also, in addition to the boat captain, his assistant and a tour guide.
The boat hit the channel beacon located about 700 meters from Chalong pier and suffered heavy damage.
About ten people, including the boat driver, suffered fractures.
Two people were seriously injured and others slightly injured.
They were taken to seven different hospitals on the island, according to local reports.
In April 2021, 47 Chinese tourists died after their boat sank due to bad weather in Phuket.
