4 Cannabis Strains from Thailand Could Help Fight Cancer

Recent scientific studies show that four varieties of Thai cannabis may be effective in fighting cancer.

These cannabis strains prevent cells of several types of cancer from multiplying.

The tests were conducted on lab-grown breast, kidney, lung, colon, brain, and pancreatic cancer cells, among others.

The study was conducted by the Plant Research Institute of the Department of Medical Sciences, with the aim of using cannabis for medical purposes.

“These cannabis varieties are Hang Sua Sakon Nakhon TT1, Tanao Sri Kan Khao WA1, Tanao Sri Kan Daeng RD1, and Hang Karok Phu Phan ST1,” said Dr. Supphakit Siriluck, director general of the department.

“They are rich in tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD), which can be extracted using the supercritical fluid extraction method.

"Experiments have shown that THC and CBD collected from these cannabis strains can effectively prevent lab-grown cancer cells of different types from growing and can also help repair damage to lab-grown lung cells," he added.

"The toxicological experiment also revealed that cannabis extracts do not cause mutagenicity in bacteria.

However, they have the potential to become toxic to kidney cells, liver cells, and lung cells grown in the lab, in descending order.

Supphakit added that these results were published in the department's medical journal to expose the medical quality of Thai cannabis while showing the possibility of toxicity in cells of specific organs.

"The department will continue animal experiments and then move to clinical trials to ensure that cannabis extracts can be used safely in cancer patients," he added.
