A Belgian arrested for the murder of a compatriot in Thailand

A Belgian killed another Belgian who, according to the accused, was extorting money from him and threatening his family, in northeastern Thailand.

On May 26, the Seka police station in Bueng Kan Province questioned Mr. Steve, a 42-year-old Belgian man residing with his Thai wife in Seka district.

Steve was arrested on May 25 by police from Region 4 and charged with premeditated murder, possession of firearms and ammunition without permission.

The Belgian stated that the deceased, Mr. Christophe, a 49-year-old fellow countryman, regularly asked him for money.

On the evening of the incident, May 24, he refused to give 850,000 baht ($21,369) to Christophe, who allegedly threatened to harm his family and burn his house.

The suspect stated that he had heard these threats several times, which stressed him and his family.

The significant amount of the demand suggests that it may have been the repayment of an unofficial loan.

His children couldn't even go to school because they were afraid of being hurt by the deceased.

In a fit of anger, he met Christophe at a house in Seka Tai sub-district, near Kasa reservoir, and used a .22 caliber handgun to shoot his compatriot three times, who collapsed and died instantly.

He then dragged the body and threw it into an old pit 50 meters from the house, and burned two car tires to dispose of the corpse.

The forensic police of Bueng Kan collected evidence from the site where the suspect burned the body on May 25, 2024.

He then drove a pickup truck carrying the victim's motorcycle and threw it more than 60 kilometers from the provincial border.

However, an investigation team from Region 4 of the police, who were there to apprehend drug trafficking suspects, found his behavior suspicious and approached him for questioning.

Panicked, he tried to flee in the vehicle, but he was intercepted and arrested.

He was then taken away for questioning.

Later, he confessed to the murder, led the interrogating officers to inspect the crime scene, and indicated where the used firearm was hidden.

The police seized a handgun, a magazine of ammunition, 6 bullets and 3 shells as evidence.

Seka police station then notified Bueng Kan forensic police, doctors from Seka Hospital and Theparak Seka Rescue Association to help them find evidence and witnesses in the case.

Upon arriving at the scene, they found that flames and smoke were still rising from the 2-meter-deep pit where the victim's body had been thrown.

The agents extinguished the fire and used equipment to recover fragments of human bones and ashes, which they then sifted through in search of evidence.

There are enough of these settlements that harm the image of the smiling country!

After the Chinese, Russians, Swiss, French, now it's the Belgians who are getting a bad rap and joining the list of Europeans whose reputation as 'nice tourists' is going down the drain !!!

Clearly, Thailand in 2024 is not attracting the 'high quality of international tourists of the world', but is more like a refuge for crooks trying to escape the police services in their country of origin for past criminal acts or who don't call on Thai justice representatives to settle a conflict they're victims of and instead prefer to settle it 'manu militari' with the ensuing judicial consequences..

Clearly, some people are going about it the wrong way to go unnoticed !!!
