Nationwide ban on the sale and consumption of alcohol in Thailand for the elections

Thailand enforces a nationwide ban on the sale and consumption of alcohol this Sunday, February 1, on the occasion of the advance voting.

Bars, restaurants, and businesses must suspend alcohol sales until 6 p.m., under penalty of severe sanctions.

The Electoral Commission (EC) has imposed strict rules for early voting this Sunday, February 1st.

A nationwide ban on alcohol related to early voting

This measure aims to ensure order and fairness as voters go to the polls before the general election.

The ban on selling, distributing, or organizing parties with alcohol took effect at 6 pm on Saturday, January 31, and remains strictly in force until 6 pm today, Sunday, February 1st.

This ban applies to all stores, restaurants, bars, and entertainment venues across Thailand.

Severe criminal penalties in case of violation

The authorities have recalled that offenders face heavy penalties.

Anyone caught violating this rule risks a prison sentence of up to six months, a fine of up to 10,000 bahts (267 euros), or both.

The police will strictly enforce these measures throughout the day.

This early voting day allows registered voters to vote in advance.

The EC also reminded the public that the main general elections will be held next week, on Sunday, February 8.

A similar ban on consuming alcohol will then apply, from 6 pm on February 7 to 6 pm on February 8.

What expatriates and tourists need to know

Expatriates and tourists should note that entertainment venues will likely remain closed or stop serving alcohol during these hours.

Convenience stores and supermarkets will also suspend the sale of alcohol.

Traffic, restrictions and end of election campaign

Campaign activities must also cease during this period in order to comply with electoral laws.

Residents should prepare for potential traffic jams around polling stations today.

The EC invites everyone to respect the regulations in order to ensure the smooth conduct of the poll.
