The city of Bangkok is now using artificial intelligence (AI) software to spot drivers who violate traffic laws.
The capital of Thailand plans to use it soon at major intersections to ease traffic flow.
Governor Chadchart Sittipunt said the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) is now using AI in eight locations across the capital.
“Technology can be used to catch offenders.
"Many pedestrians are their victims, especially in Bangkok where around 900 of them are knocked down every year by motorcyclists using the sidewalks," he said.
The BMA uses artificial intelligence software to catch traffic violators using existing surveillance cameras.
AI can spot them, identify them and report them to the city police, whereas previously it was up to them to do all the work, Chadchart explained.
During the short period from June 12 to 20, 2,990 offending motorcyclists were caught using AI for illegally riding on sidewalks.
The BMA also uses AI to fine drivers who park their vehicles in no-parking zones, particularly near the Central World shopping mall in the Pratunam area and on Nana Road.
The artificial intelligence program detects and identifies vehicles that remain parked for more than five minutes before reporting them to the police, the Bangkok governor said.
“In about two months, we will expand the artificial intelligence system to 100 other locations in the capital.
“We are ultimately looking at using AI to increase enforcement at traffic lights and use this technology to improve traffic flow and ease traffic flow,” he said.
