Ceasefire broken? Thailand accuses, Cambodia denies

Since the signing of a ceasefire that came into effect at midnight on Monday, July 28, tensions remain high at the border.

The Royal Thai Army spokesman denounced Cambodia for repeatedly violating the ceasefire agreement.

Army spokesman Major General Winthai Suvaree told Thailand's National Broadcasting Services that the Cambodian attack using guns and grenades took place in Phu Makhuea, in Thailand's Si Sa Ket province, around 9 p.m. Tuesday.

“The use of weapons was inappropriate because we are in a ceasefire period and we must demonstrate mutual trust.

The army must condemn this type of action.

"This is the second time that weapons have been used during the ceasefire," the spokesperson said.

"Cambodia has not respected the agreed rules," General Winthai said.

The army spokesman also said Thai forces remained along the border to monitor the situation and had not used their weapons.

He also denied rumors that Cambodian drones had targeted Thai positions in neighboring Ubon Ratchathani province, saying the reported damage, including torn-off roof tiles, was caused by strong winds.

Government spokesman Jirayu Houngsub said on the Government House Facebook page Wednesday morning that Cambodian troops fired gunshots and threw hand grenades at Thai soldiers in the Phu Makhuea area of the northeastern province of Si Sa Ket.

The Thai Foreign Ministry said Wednesday that Cambodian attacks in the Phu Makhuea region continued until Wednesday morning and took place after the ceasefire agreement between the two countries came into effect at midnight Monday night.

"Such an act of aggression constitutes a further flagrant violation of the ceasefire agreement by Cambodian forces and demonstrates their obvious lack of good faith," the ministry said.

"Thailand reaffirms its full commitment to the ceasefire and the peaceful resolution of the current situation and strongly calls on Cambodia to immediately cease all violations and fully comply with the aforementioned ceasefire agreement," he added.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the Kingdom of Cambodia has issued a statement refuting Thailand's claims of ceasefire violations.

Excerpt from the statement:

“As a party deeply committed to peace, Cambodia unequivocally affirms its unwavering dedication to the full and unwavering implementation of the Ceasefire Agreement reached between Cambodia and Thailand on July 28, 2025 in Putrajaya, Malaysia.

Cambodia's determination to maintain this ceasefire is absolute and enduring.

At no time did the Cambodian armed forces participate in any actions that could be interpreted as a violation of the agreed ceasefire.

This is completely contrary to the fabricated allegations made in the official statement of the Royal Thai Government, published on July 29, 2025.

The Royal Government of Cambodia firmly rejects misleading and fabricated accusations, which distort the facts on the ground and dangerously threaten the fragile trust and dialogue essential to lasting peace.

Cambodia reiterates that it has no intention, now or in the future, of violating the ceasefire.

Our primary objective is to ensure that peace not only prevails, but endures, for the benefit of both nations and the stability of the entire region."

Who is lying?

Thai soldiers carry one of their colleagues injured after a landmine exploded while patrolling near the Chong An Ma border crossing in Ubon Ratchathani province on Wednesday, July 23, 2025. The soldier's leg had to be amputated.

Since the beginning of the conflict, Thailand and Cambodia have been blaming each other for the hostilities: who fired first, who laid mines , and now who is violating the ceasefire...

Each incident fuels mistrust further and blurs the line between facts and propaganda.

In the age of satellites, drones and instantaneous images, one might be surprised at the lack of independent surveillance devices in these sensitive areas.

Fixed cameras, third-party observers or video recordings could, however, make it possible to establish the facts objectively and limit narrative manipulation.

Update : Channel 7 reported that a Thai soldier on the front lines recorded a video on his watch, with gunfire in the background, as evidence of a ceasefire violation.

At this time, no new casualties or injuries have been reported on either side.

According to the latest update today at 8 a.m. by local journalist Wassana Nanuam, the situation at the border has returned to normal, with no further clashes reported.

I don't really see what interest Cambodia would have in prolonging the armed conflict...

Its leaders, in this case the HUN family, father and son, have on the contrary an interest in ensuring that their army respects this ceasefire in order to very quickly begin talks that would allow the reopening of the borders between the two countries and the free passage of goods and people, in particular all those who come there to spend their money in casinos and gaming centers...

Cambodia has no interest in prolonging this closure of the crossing points, which is costing their economy dearly, based on corruption, mafia activities and money laundering from fraudulent call centers, via the legal activity of casinos, which are currently operating at a slow pace...

Apparently, and militarily speaking, the situation has returned to calm, but for how long?

In any case, if these skirmishes were to happen again, this is not the way Thailand will reopen its crossing points between the two countries and help normalize the current, more than tense, relations.

Cambodia has an interest in keeping a low profile during the upcoming negotiations, but nationalism, exacerbated by speeches of national glory and hatred towards the opposing party, does not go in the direction of a general easing of current relations...

In terms of their negotiating skills, they come across as amateurs, with very little experience and a distinct lack of a sense of compromise...
