Thailand has issued a heatwave alert as temperatures could reach 42 to 43°C in several northern provinces.

The public, particularly vulnerable groups, people with chronic illnesses and outdoor workers, is urged to take precautions against heatstroke, as temperatures are expected to exceed last year's levels.

Ayrin Phanrit, deputy government spokesperson, stated:

"Temperatures could reach 42 to 43 degrees Celsius in high-risk areas, including the provinces of Mae Hong Son, Lampang, and Tak, and people should therefore avoid staying outdoors for extended periods."

It is advisable to limit outdoor activities between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m., to drink water frequently and to wear "comfortable clothing" in order to reduce the risk of heatstroke, which can be fatal.

High-risk groups include the elderly, infants and young children, people with chronic illnesses such as heart disease, lung disease and obesity, and people who work outdoors.

Heatstroke occurs when the body overheats and affects vital systems.

"Avoid staying outside for extended periods of time.".

Also avoid consuming alcohol and do not leave anyone in the car (unattended), especially young children,” Ms. Ayrin said.

In addition, the meteorological service announced that storms are expected from Tuesday to Friday, starting in the northeast before hitting the east, the central plains, Bangkok and its surroundings, as well as the north.

Air pollution levels remain low to moderate due to moderate ventilation and expected rainfall, the service said.
