Nearly 3,000 inmates in a Thai prison infected with Covid-19 have recovered after being treated with green chirette (Andrographis paniculata).
"Let me share with you these interesting figures. A total of 1,251 infected inmates at Chiang Mai Prison were treated with favipiravir, while 2,914 were treated with the herbal medicine green chirette alone," Justice Minister Somsak Thepsutin said on Friday, July 16.
People with coughs and difficulty breathing were treated with favipiravir , while those with less severe symptoms were given the herbal remedy, he said.
He was speaking at a meeting with several state agencies on a policy to promote the cultivation of herbs in all prisons.
In light of this experience, he said he wanted to encourage the cultivation of this medicinal plant for domestic use, especially as the country records more than 9,000 new cases of Covid-19 every day.
Amphan Welutanti, deputy permanent secretary for agriculture and cooperatives, said the ministry was ready to support Mr. Somsak's idea.
