Loy Krathong 2025: Bangkok opens 33 parks for the Festival of Lights

Bangkok will open 33 parks for the Loy Krathong festival on November 5, encouraging eco-friendly krathongs and family participation.

The Loy Krathong 2025 festival falls on Wednesday, November 5, and the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) will open 33 public parks in 21 districts to allow residents to celebrate this centuries-old Thai tradition that pays homage to the river goddess.

Call for the use of eco-friendly krathongs

The BMA invites revelers to use krathongs made from natural materials such as banana leaves and trunks, which decompose easily.

Foam krathongs are strictly prohibited.

The city also discourages the use of bread or food-based floats in public parks, as the ponds are closed systems and food waste can cause water pollution.

During Loy Krathong 2023, many fish died due to bread-based krathongs.

To reduce waste, the BMA promotes the concept 'One family, one krathong', encouraging families to float together.

For safety reasons, the BMA has banned sky lanterns, fireworks, firecrackers, and the sale of alcohol in public parks.

Offenders are liable to legal prosecution.

In 2024, the BMA collected 514,590 krathongs, of which 98.39% (506,320) were made from natural materials and only 1.61% (8,270) were made from foam, representing a 19.57% decrease compared to 2023.

Environmentally conscious participants can also join the online Loy Krathong celebration via the website greener.bangkok.go.th between 5 am and midnight on November 5.

Last year, 36,832 krathongs were floated online, alongside 10,885 digital krathongs launched on four interactive sites.

The BMA said this campaign reflects Bangkok's commitment to combining cultural heritage and environmental sustainability.
