The blood of the Malayan monitor lizard is being researched in Thailand for its medicinal properties and potential to treat cancer and even Covid-19.
The Thai government has authorized Mahidol University to collect blood samples from this protected species and study blood proteins that contribute to the lizard's immune defense.
According to a professor at Mahidol University's Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, these large lizards, which sometimes reach 1.5 meters, have a powerful immune system, which allows them to live in polluted waters and eat rotting animals.
While researchers say proteins in the lizard's blood inhibit the growth of cancer cells and some bacteria, further studies are needed to determine whether healthy human cells are affected by the reptile's blood.
The initial study is expected to be completed by the end of the year.
Researchers will test whether blood can fight different viruses such as bird flu and Covid-19.
