Why is Thai cuisine often very spicy?

Grab Thailand has revealed the list of most frequently ordered dishes via its home delivery application for the year 2023.

Grab released the report 'My Food and Grocery Trend 2023', which studied the behavior of users in six Southeast Asian countries, including Thailand, to order food and buy products in their daily lives.

In Thailand, the most popular dish ordered throughout the year is papaya salad with crab and fermented fish (Somtam Pou Pla Ra), with a total of over 4.4 million dishes ordered this year.

This salad, which is normally very spicy (customers can choose the number of chilies), originates from northeastern Thailand but is popular throughout the country.

Black coffee is the most consumed beverage, with a total of more than 4.6 million cups ordered.

During the New Year, the top five best-selling dishes are pizza, mala hotpot, fried chicken, sandwiches, and hamburgers.

In addition, Thailand is experiencing a significant movement, namely the trend towards Omnicommerce.

Consumers are increasingly using food ordering applications to connect to their lifestyle outside the home.

Orders from both in-store pickup and on-site consumption have increased more than 23 times in the first half of 2023.

In-store pickup increased by more than 140% in the second quarter of this year compared to the fourth quarter of the previous year.

The top five best-selling items during the year were eggs, drinking water, fresh vegetables, milk, and ice cubes.

During the past year, more than 10 million eggs and more than 9 million bottles of drinking water were sold through GrabMart.

Ms. Chansuda Thananitayaudom, Executive Vice President of Commercial and Marketing Division of Grab Thailand said:

"The year 2023 is expected to see a significant change in the behavior of users on delivery platforms.

In a more concrete approach, we see customers combining their lives outside their homes with their shopping habits via platforms.

As a result, platform providers have been forced to adapt and develop services to respond to changing behaviors and contexts »;.
