Plane crash in Thailand: 5 tourists and 4 crew members reportedly dead

A small airliner flying in Thailand crashed shortly after takeoff from Bangkok's main airport on Thursday, August 22.

Rescuers have so far found no survivors at the crash site, a mangrove forest in Chachoengsao province about 40 km from the airport.

After about an hour of searching, rescuers found badly damaged body parts in the difficult, marshy terrain.

The names of those on board were not immediately available, but the spokesperson said they included five Chinese tourists from Hong Kong, two Thai female crew members, and the Thai pilot and co-pilot.

A spokesperson for Hong Kong's Immigration Department said Friday that he had immediately tried to understand the situation through the Foreign Affairs Office in Beijing and the Chinese Embassy in Thailand.

The department has not received any requests for assistance from Hong Kong residents related to the plane crash so far, the spokesperson added.

The cause of the accident is not yet known.

The Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand said the turboprop plane, a Cessna Caravan C208B operated by Thai Flying Service Company, departed Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi Airport at 2:46 p.m.

Air traffic control lost radio and radar contact with the aircraft 11 minutes later, when it was about 35 km southeast of the airport.

The plane was heading to Trat, a province in the east of the country located about 275 km southeast of the Thai capital.

A video taken by one of the rescuers shows highly fragmented pieces of the plane in the water in the middle of a wooded area.

A lifeguard can be seen in chest-deep muddy water.

A Chachoengsao provincial spokesman said the search was proceeding slowly because it was already dark and the rising tide had flooded the crash site with even more water.
