Thailand and China strengthen their partnership with 14 key agreements

Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra and Chinese Premier Li Qiang presided over the signing of 14 bilateral agreements.

These agreements strengthen cooperation between Thailand and China in many strategic sectors, as the two nations prepare to celebrate 50 years of diplomatic relations in 2025, the 'Golden Year of Thailand-China Friendship'.

The agreements, signed at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing, include a joint statement and 13 memoranda of understanding on cooperation in the fields of economy, investment, energy, and customs.

The main Thai agencies involved are the National Economic and Social Development Council, the Ministry of Energy, and the Eastern Economic Corridor Office.

Several memoranda of understanding also cover scientific collaboration, technological advancements, and digital economy initiatives.

Another series of agreements focuses on customs cooperation, streamlining agricultural trade, and cross-border goods processing through partnerships between the Thai Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives and the Customs Department with their Chinese counterparts.

These efforts aim to improve trade efficiency and ensure smooth market access for major agricultural exports.

In the field of scientific and technological cooperation, agreements have been signed between the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation and the Ministry of Digital Economy and Society.

These partnerships focus on research, innovation and digital transformation to support Thailand's economic modernization and regional technological integration.

Collaboration in the field of information and media has also been highlighted, with agreements between the Thai Public Relations Department and the Thai Public Broadcasting Service with Xinhua News Agency.

These efforts aim to counter misinformation, strengthen news exchange and improve cyber resilience against digital threats such as fraudulent call centers and online scams, a key issue raised by Prime Minister Paetongtarn during her talks with Chinese leaders.

As part of her official visit from February 5 to 8, Ms. Paetongtarn attended the opening ceremony of the 9th Asian Winter Games in Harbin on February 7.

Her participation underscores Thailand's commitment to strengthening regional cooperation in the economic, technological, and cultural fields.

When we draw up the list of sectors concerned by these numerous agreements generated and signed by the 2 countries, we can only have a feeling of a well-supported and multi-directional partnership between Thailand and China, at a time when the United States is implementing a policy of economic tightening which consists of taxing their imported products from certain surplus countries (of which Thailand is a part with other countries in the 'Brics' group).

Is this the right way to anticipate and react to the arrogance, threats and violence of Uncle Donald's economic attacks on the rest of the world and particularly on the competing countries that are China and those in the 'Brics+ »' group?

A message addressed to the oversized ego of the Trump - Musk duo, or a coincidence of political and cultural timing in this year that will celebrate 50 years of friendship and cooperation between China and Thailand?

I find the timing of the Shinawatra government particularly well chosen in the current context of geopolitical and economic tensions that are shaking the planet…

Very certainly oil poured on the American barbecue of the weekend… and I don't believe, in this case and at this time, in a naive coincidence…
