Thailand: Foreign tourist causes terrible accident in Pattaya

A Chinese driver caused a multi-vehicle crash that killed a Thai man in Pattaya, eastern Thailand.

Two foreign tourists were also injured in the accident which took place on Thep Prasit Street in the seaside resort of Pattaya on the night of Thursday, December 5.

The accident damaged eight cars, including a black MG, a black Chevrolet Cruze, a black Suzuki sedan, a bronze Mitsubishi Pajero SUV, and five nearby motorcycles.

It cost the life of Mr Sahaprom, 30, who was driving the black MG car that was hit and overturned in front of a petrol station.

Police then arrested the driver, a 39-year-old Chinese national, Mr. Zhang, who witnesses said showed no emotion or signs of shock after the accident.

The Chinese driver maintained a blank expression, showing no signs of shock after crashing into several vehicles, killing one victim on Thep Prasit Road in Pattaya on December 5, 2024.

During questioning at Pattaya Police Station, Police Colonel Nawin Teerawit said Zhang claimed he was sleepy and tired before the accident.

After the first collision, he panicked and continued driving, causing multiple accidents thereafter.

Alcohol tests came back negative, but authorities are awaiting drug test results from Bang Lamung Hospital.

More than ten victims gathered at the police station for preliminary discussions and future negotiations.

Concerned about the possibility of escaping responsibility, victims created a LINE chat group to discuss legal proceedings.

The investigation revealed that Zhang, who previously held a work visa in Pattaya, returned to Thailand on a tourist visa after his work permit expired.

Sources indicate that he owns shares in local car rental and liquor companies.

His relatives said he used to use his phone while driving and had had an argument with his girlfriend on the day of the incident.

This is reminiscent of the incident caused by an angry Japanese tourist after an argument with his Thai girlfriend in Pattaya in July this year.

The man drove his car into a popular restaurant and then hit several cars and motorcycles before colliding with a tourist bus.

Police have charged Zhang with dangerous driving causing death and property damage, and further charges may be filed as the investigation continues.

...We should also mention the number of deaths caused to foreigners by Thais who are drunk or under the influence of drugs, or by the state of certain roads.
