Thailand wants to become a hub for aviation in Asia

The latest data on tourism in Thailand indicates that the country has welcomed more than 3 million tourists from the beginning of the year until July 23.

The data released by the Thai government shows that the largest number of tourists arriving in the country came from the United States of America, with 366,568 tourists, followed by India, with 313,053 tourists, and Singapore, with 171,034 tourists.

The increase in the number of tourists prompted Prime Minister Prayut Chan-ocha to announce on Saturday (July 23) to Parliament that he expects a total of 10 million tourists to arrive in Thailand during the course of this year.

The Prime Minister's statement was also echoed by Yuthasak Supasorn, Governor of the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), who said that TAT's goal was for 7 to 10 million foreign tourists to visit Thailand.

This desire to attract more tourists is explained by the fact that the country has managed to lift all restrictions imposed on travelers and that the cancellation of the Thailand Pass as of July 1, 2022 has helped stimulate the influx of tourists.

The number of tourists visiting Thailand per day in July continued to increase beyond expectations of 30,000 and reached 47,000, whereas in June 2022, there were around 21,000-25,000 foreign tourists per day.

The rise in tourism is expected to help the hotel and catering sector which suffered from the impact of lockdowns.

Among the 10 most popular destinations in the world

In response to the revival of the tourism sector in the second half of 2022, Agoda.com, the global digital travel platform, ranked the most popular destinations in the world for 2022, following the improvement of the Covid-19 situation and the easing of control measures that stimulate tourism in various countries around the world

The ranking results show that Bangkok and Pattaya, in Thailand, are among the top 10 most popular tourist destinations in the world for summer 2022,

Bangkok being number 1 and Pattaya number 8 in the world.

Thanakorn Wangboonkongchana, the spokesperson for the Prime Minister's office, said that the Prime Minister was pleased that Agoda ranked Bangkok as the number 1 most popular summer destination in the world in 2022.

"The Prime Minister congratulated all relevant agencies for integrating cooperation in the effective development of the Thai tourism industry, both in supporting policies, implementing guidelines set by the government, and strengthening the confidence of foreign tourists," he revealed.

Thanakorn concluded that thanks to cooperation, tourism in Thailand has become popular again among foreign tourists and has urged all parties concerned to continue to raise awareness among tourists in order to elevate the Thai tourism industry towards sustainable growth in line with the competitive environment, economic developments and the challenges of the modern world.

A glimmer of hope for a substantial increase in the number of international tourists for the last 6 months of this miserable year 2022?

It is likely that this figure of 3 million tourists will double, given that November and December make up 2/3 of the high tourist season in Thailand…

I would count on a figure between 6 and 7 million arrivals for the whole of 2022, which would already be a satisfactory result given the current situation, but which remains far from the usually overly optimistic statements of government officials who still hope to welcome 10 to 12 million foreign tourists by December 31!

Although I wish it for the 3 million Thais who lived on tourism in 2019 and who found themselves unemployed for over 2 and a half years in a few months!

Currently, only 40 to 60% of them, depending on the specific sectors related to tourism (hotels, tour operators, motorcycle or car rental companies, restaurants, bars, souvenir shops, diving clubs, beach equipment rental companies, ferry companies, airlines, etc.) are currently rising from the ashes, while 30 to 40% are definitively declared bankrupt and will not resume their activities.

Regarding Bangkok and its ranking as the world's number one destination, it should be noted that this top spot is largely due not to its tourist appeal, but to the fact that its international airport welcomes 85 to 90% of foreign tourists as their first destination, with the remaining 10 to 15% going to Phuket airport, which has direct flights with several airlines, notably those from the Saudi and Qatari Emirates.

However, tourists arriving in Bangkok stay there on average only 3 to 4 days, just long enough to visit some of the most well-known tourist spots: temples, the Grand Palace, Chinatown, the Klongs, before heading to the centers of interest such as Pattaya for its nightlife, Chiang Mai, Pai, Chiang Rai in the North and Phuket / Krabi and the islands in the South. Agoda's statistics are based not on the number of nights stayed, but on the number of tourists booking a room…

To be taken with a grain of salt, depending on the parameters considered!

Hopefully, for Thais still waiting for the tourist “rush” promised by the authorities since July 1, the high season will see the number of tourists increase from 30/40,000 per day to 60/70,000 in October and 80/100,000 per day in November and December, which should confirm the government’s figure of 10 million tourists for the whole of 2022…

Personally, I doubt it… but you never know !!!
