Thailand turns to medicinal plants to fight Covid-19

A hospital in Thailand has warned people that consuming andrographis paniculata in large quantities can damage the kidneys and liver.

Chao Phraya Abhaibhubejhr Hospital in Prachin Buri province issued the warning after seeing a surge in demand from people who believe the plant can protect them from Covid-19.

People are rushing to buy andrographis paniculata ('fah talai jone' in Thai) after the Thai Department of Traditional and Alternative Medicine recently announced that the herb had cured more than 300 patients with mild symptoms of Covid-19.

Since the first wave of Covid-19 broke out in Thailand, some hospitals, including Chao Phraya Abhaibhubejhr, have been using andrographis paniculata along with other medications to treat Covid-19 patients.

The patients apparently recovered without side effects.

Last December, the Ministry of Public Health approved the use of andrographis paniculata to treat early-stage Covid-19.

However, Thai experts warn that there is no solid scientific evidence that andrographis paniculata can boost immunity or relieve symptoms of Covid-19.

The plant extract has been used for centuries in Asia to combat influenza and related illnesses.

Chao Phraya Abhaibhubejhr Hospital added that research has indicated that the plant can help prevent the flu if consumed in small amounts continuously for three months.

A doctor at the hospital said that fah talai jone boosts immunity.

What double-blind study validates this?

Are you guru-ized by Big Pharma?

Medicinal plants have been used for hundreds of years without double-blind studies, they treat a large number of diseases and the Chao Phraya Abhaibhubejhr Hospital has a very good reputation.

Bigpharma has used these well-known plants to create many medicines.

And many modern drugs that have passed double-blind studies, often rigged or done haphazardly to get the product out there, have been withdrawn from the market afterward due to their dangers.
