Increase in deadly road accidents in Phuket, Thailand

Les autorités de Phuket se sont réunies le 3 janvier pour parler du nombre d’accidents de moto impliquant des étrangers en vacance sur leurs routes.

Thailand is coming to the end of the "seven dangerous days", where road accidents and deaths tend to increase during the New Year holidays.

During a daily briefing on January 3 at Phuket Provincial Hall, officials stated that foreign tourists renting motorcycles and driving recklessly or dangerously are a common denominator in the number of accidents reported on the island.

The head of Phuket's provincial office of the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation presented the daily figures and discussed the issue with foreign motorcyclists.

The deputy director of the Phuket branch of the Internal Security Operations Command chaired the meeting to inform road safety officials of the latest updates regarding the seven days of danger.

They proposed creating new rules or measures to control foreigners renting motorcycles to prevent them from driving recklessly on the road.

They did not specify whether they were considering tightening the road code for foreigners or regulating people allowed to rent a motorcycle, for example by checking the driving license or the ability and experience of riding a motorcycle before being allowed to rent one.

On December 2, six accidents were officially reported on the roads of Phuket.

Four men and two women were admitted to the hospital and treated for injuries, with no fatalities.

Since the start of the "Seven Days of Danger" campaign, from December 29 to January 2, there were 24 road accidents with 24 injured and one fatality in Phuket.

Among those hospitalized for injuries, 14 were men and 11 were women.

Motorcycles were involved in more accidents than any other type of vehicle.

And the causes of most accidents were risky driving, drunk driving, and speeding.

It is interesting to note that the nationalities of the people involved in road accidents in the report were not mentioned.

After 20 years in Thailand and long trips on a big motorcycle, I've never had an accident, I have a French and Thai motorcycle license.

I respect other road users and pay attention to my driving…

But, indeed, I see too many tourists on rental scooters acting recklessly.

Of course, rental companies want to rent out their vehicles, but no attention is paid to the international license of the clients…

And many don't have experience with 2 wheels…

The driving of the Thai is special… safe… but never fast…

And you must not forget the insurance that will not cover anything in case of a bug if you are not the holder of a 2-wheel license… each person decides their own fate, but also that of others…

To plan a major reform of all this…
