It has more than 120,000 inhabitants in 2025 in the municipality, but if we include its wider metropolitan area (Bang Lamung, Na Klua, Jomtien, Sattahip), the population exceeds one million inhabitants .

Every year, the city and its surrounding area welcome several million Thai and foreign tourists , making it one of the most visited beach destinations in Thailand.

In addition, there are many Thais coming from the capital to have fun on weekends and others coming mainly from the northeast of the country, Issan, to work.

And the seaside resort can accommodate its many visitors, it has more than 141 hotel establishments for a total of 31,581 rooms (2024 data).

In the wider Pattaya–Chonburi tourist region, the supply reaches nearly 300,000 rooms according to the TAT (2025).

Pattaya City is largely populated by residents from other parts of the country, attracted by tourism revenue.

There is no shortage of work in the tourism industry: hotels, restaurants, massage parlors, various shops and the numerous girlie bars that give the city its seedy reputation.

Pattaya mainly attracts tourists who come to experience the completely crazy nightlife and gogo bars .

The city consists of three main districts: Jomtien in the south, central Pattaya and Naklua in the north.

Jomtien

Jomtien is the quieter, family-friendly part, and it also has cleaner beaches.

This area offers many activities, water sports, diving, but also nature walks and places to shop.

Pattaya center

The busy center of Pattaya is mainly made up of two parallel avenues, Beach Road and Second Road (see map below), which are connected by perpendicular alleys (alley = soi in Thai, pronounced "soille").

There is the city part, with the bus station, the markets and the red-light district with its go-go bars, massage parlors and the many hotels and restaurants.

Naklua

Naklua is a very quiet residential part of Pattaya, yet it is home to some of the most iconic landmarks, such as the Sanctuary of Truth and many attractions.

History of Pattaya

It was American soldiers, during the Vietnam War, who discovered this pretty bay with its 4 km long arc-shaped beach in 1960.

There was only a small fishing village and the US soldiers will motivate the construction of bungalows and small restaurants.

With the Vietnam War over and the military gone, tourism slowly developed until 1980 when it experienced a dizzying growth.

Russian, Indian and Chinese tourists have been arriving in large numbers since the 2000s.

In 2025, Pattaya attracts a very diverse clientele: Thai families, European retirees, Indian and Chinese tourists, but also many travelers from Southeast Asia.

Today, Pattaya is the most visited city in Thailand, after Bangkok.

Here is the translation of an article from the Bangkok Post on February 26, 2017 (translated by Daily Thailand )

It was just a small fishing village on the Gulf of Thailand .

Nothing more. Its long, windswept bay was dotted with a few boats and huts where the villagers lived.

On June 29, 1959, a group of 500 GIs stationed at a military base in Nakhon Ratchasima were sent to Pattaya for a week's rest.

They rented several houses from a local notable, Luang Sunthorn... and thus opened Pandora's box of what would never again be a sleepy village.

Very quickly, the soldiers of the American contingent decided that Pattaya was the best destination to rest and have a good time.

It was the very rapid development of the Sattahip air base (which became U-tapao) from 1964 onwards that allowed the seaside resort to acquire an international dimension.

For almost half a century, Pattaya served as a rear base for Allied troops on leave, before becoming the "sex city" in the minds of tourists from around the world.

Until 1976, approximately 700,000 Allied soldiers stayed in Pattaya , with the explicit agreement of the local authorities.

Prostitution has been legal in Thailand for a very long time.

By 1680, during the Ayutthaya period, it was fully legal.

There were even state-run brothels.

The North Vietnamese victory in 1975 naturally had significant consequences for business.

Many bars disappeared and many women, who had amassed a small fortune, took early retirement.

It was from 1978 that foreign tourists replaced the military.

Many GIs stayed in Pattaya , married Thai women, opened bars and restaurants, and kept the GI spirit alive for a few more years.

Gradually, Pattaya became the city where it was easy to find a beautiful woman, as it is impossible to imagine anywhere else except in Asia.

All it takes is a little money and some sorting skills to avoid disappointment.

Pattaya will never be a city geared towards family tourism, as the government hopes.

All the most remote villages in Issan have at least two or three families, often more, created by the meeting of a farang and a local girl.

Those who have succeeded set an example to follow.

There are no official statistics to determine the contribution of foreigners to the kingdom's GDP.

Some people use the figure of 3% to estimate the income from prostitution alone, which is largely fueled by Thais themselves.

According to our calculations, those who marry Thai women contribute more to the country's economy.
