The Cursed Marriage is a Thai legend that tells the story of how a man of ill repute and a gossip sabotaged a wedding.
In Ratchaburi lived a young man named Nai Kaeo, who was drawn to pleasures, particularly those provided by the caresses of women.
Despite this depraved life, he one day fell in love with the beautiful and virtuous Meh Pian.
Nai Kaeo's parents went to the girl's house to ask for her hand in marriage, but the latter refused to marry their child to a suitor who had such a bad reputation.
On the contrary, the next day they accepted the proposal of the parents of Nai Tong, an honest and hard-working boy.
Despairing at the turn of events, Nai Kaeo confessed his torment to the old hairdresser who was also the worst gossip in the whole town.
The old woman agreed to help him in exchange for a substantial sum of money.
She immediately visited the bride-to-be's best friend, who wanted a beautiful hairstyle for the ceremony.
As the conversation progressed, the hairdresser implied that this marriage was a big mistake, and when the girl asked why, she replied that Nai Kaeo was a ghoul.
Moreover, his words would be very simple to verify during the wedding night, the bride would suddenly see a tail grow on her husband's buttocks, and all she would have to do then is grab it to take control of the creature.
A few hours later, the hairdresser went to the house of Nai Tong's best friend, who was also getting ready for the upcoming party.
Little by little, the old woman confessed to the young man that this marriage would be a sign of misfortune.
Faced with her client's disbelief, she explained to him that the bride was in fact a ghoul.
Besides, during the wedding night, the bridegroom would do well to stay on his guard to catch the creature's hand before it touches him.
Very pleased with her plan, the hairdresser returned to see Nai Kaeo.
He was horrified to learn that the wedding would indeed take place, but his accomplice told him not to worry.
Despite what their friends rushed to tell them, the two fiancés did not speak to each other about these suspicions, and in any case it was too late to cancel the wedding.
The ceremony took place in a very tense atmosphere, and the wedding night arrived.
Nai Tong lay on his side, his back to his wife, so as not to show her that he was not asleep.
For her part, Meh Pian put out her hand, ready to grab the smallest semblance of a tail that would appear.
Unable to bear it any longer, the husband turned around and screamed in terror when he saw his wife's hand ready to touch him.
He grabbed the threatening hand, causing Meh Pian to panic and think he was being attacked.
The two spouses each fled on their own.
Following the scandal that followed that disastrous night, and the rumors that began to spread rapidly, the wedding was quickly called off.
Meh Pian, whose reputation was tarnished, had to accept Nai Kaeo's offer of marriage.
History does not say what became of their union, the chronicles are silent on the subject, and perhaps rightly so...
